Each year, World Accreditation Day (WAD) provides an opportunity for the global conformity assessment community to reflect on the essential role accreditation plays in supporting trust in goods, services and systems worldwide. In 2026, Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated (Global ACI) joins accreditation bodies, conformity assessment bodies, policymakers and industry stakeholders in recognising the importance of accreditation, under the theme Innovation, Trust and Sustainability: The Power of Accreditation.
Accreditation in a Changing World
As economies become increasingly interconnected and technology continues to evolve, the consistent application of internationally recognised standards remains essential. Accreditation provides confidence that conformity assessment bodies, such as laboratories, certification bodies, inspection bodies and validation/verification bodies, operate with competence and impartiality.
In this context of rapid technological change, accredited conformity assessment provides an independent basis for demonstrating performance and building confidence among regulators, customers and other stakeholders. In China, for example, a technology company used CNAS-accredited certification to support the deployment of advanced quantum dot-based water quality monitoring technology. The use of accredited certification helped strengthen confidence in performance data while supporting adoption of the technology across multiple regions, and delivering measurable improvements in cost efficiency, product quality and production performance.
Strengthening Trust Across Economies
Accreditation plays a central role in supporting confidence between stakeholders who may never directly interact. Whether products are tested in one economy and placed on another market, or certifications are recognised across jurisdictions, accreditation helps ensure that results can be accepted without unnecessary duplication.
The Global ACI Multilateral Recognition Arrangement (MRA) supports this system by reducing duplication of conformity assessment activities and enabling acceptance of results between economies.
The benefits of this international recognition framework can be seen across export-oriented industries. In Thailand, BLA-DSS accredited testing laboratories for rubber products support trade by providing internationally recognised evidence of technical competence, helping strengthen confidence in product quality in key international markets. This also helps reduce the need for duplicate testing in different jurisdictions, supporting more efficient access to overseas markets for exporters.
Supporting Sustainability and Public Safety
Environmental testing, emissions monitoring, energy efficiency certification and food safety systems often depend on accredited conformity assessment bodies to provide confidence in the results produced.
As sustainability and environmental commitments become more central to policy and industry, accreditation helps ensure that the data used to support decisions is based on competent and consistent assessment practices. This strengthens confidence in the results that underpin reporting, regulation and performance measurement.
This role is also visible in initiatives that actively encourage greater participation in environmental assurance systems. In Mexico, for example, ema launched the programme ‘Together with ema to Mitigate Climate Change’, working with industry and conformity assessment bodies to promote certification, testing and inspection aligned with environmental standards. By encouraging wider uptake of accredited environmental conformity assessment, the initiative supports greater engagement with climate-related standards and strengthens the practical application of environmental assurance frameworks.
Looking Ahead
WAD 2026 reflects a new chapter for the global accreditation system, with Global ACI now operating as the single international organisation for accreditation. Commencing operations on 1 January 2026, Global ACI brings together the work previously carried out by the International Accreditation Forum (IAF) and the International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (ILAC).
Built on these established foundations, Global ACI provides one organisation, one governance framework and one global voice for accreditation, supporting a more coordinated and connected global system of confidence.
