Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated (Global ACI) and the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen cooperation between the international accreditation and metrology communities, supporting confidence in measurement results and international trade.
The agreement was signed by Global ACI Chair Brahim Houla on 21 October 2026 in Panama City, Panama, and BIPM Director Annette Koo on 22 October 2026 in Sèvres, France.
The MoU builds on the longstanding relationship between BIPM and the International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (ILAC), whose responsibilities were assumed by Global ACI on 1 January 2026. It replaces the previous BIPM–ILAC agreement and provides a framework for continued collaboration in areas of mutual interest.
BIPM is the intergovernmental organisation responsible for promoting international cooperation in measurement science and ensuring the global comparability of measurements. Its work supports scientific research, industry, innovation and international trade.
Metrology and accreditation are essential components of the international quality infrastructure. While metrology provides the scientific foundation for accurate and reliable measurements, accreditation provides independent recognition of the competence and impartiality of organisations carrying out testing, calibration and other conformity assessment activities. Together, they strengthen confidence in measurement results and support their acceptance across borders.
Under the MoU, Global ACI and BIPM will cooperate on activities including the exchange of information, coordination of policies, participation in international assessments and collaboration within technical working groups. The agreement also supports cooperation on digital transformation, including the development and promotion of the International System of Units (SI) Digital Framework.
By strengthening the links between metrology and accreditation, the agreement reinforces both organisations’ commitment to reliable measurements, international recognition and a more connected global quality infrastructure.
